Nala, my furry sister, will be 13 in about 3 months. In the past year, she’s become quite the picky eater. Mommy usually has to ‘pretty up’ her dinner in order to get her to eat it. So mommy is on a quest to find a food that she’ll enjoy eating.
But that’s not gonna be easy! She’s very picky. Most of the time, mommy includes a small cookie in our food (Breath Buster, by Pedigree). Nala was previously eating Pedigree food for senior doggies, but she suddenly decided that she didn’t like it anymore. She had no trouble eating other foods, so mommy knew she wasn’t sick.
Mommy went to the store with Taylor, and was overwhelmed at all the different kinds of doggie kibble! How were they to choose?
Then mommy spotted something different on the top shelf. There were a few different packages of kibble from Rachael Ray, called Nutrish. Who knew that Rachael Ray even had her own doggie food line?
Mommy took a bag off the shelf and read the package: “Simple & Natural Ingredients. Real chicken is the #1 ingredient. No chicken by-product meal or fillers. No artificial flavors or artificial preservatives. 100% complete and balanced nutrition for dogs.”
It also said, that proceeds from Nutrish go to “pet charities and other organizations that do good for animals.” To learn more about Rachael’s Rescue, click here.
Look below for the Good Stuff vs. the Not-So-Good Stuff…
Rachael Ray’s NutrishTM
As you look at the doggie food in the following pictures, you’ll see a few different colors: red, light brown, and dark brown. The red, light brown and some of the dark brown are from the Nutrish with “Real Chicken & Veggies,” the product I’m reviewing. The other dark brown kibble is from Rachael Ray’s Just 6. Mommy had to buy Just 6 on a recent store visit, ’cause they didn’t have any Nutrish. She’s mixing in the Just 6 with the Nutrish, because it’s healthier, but Nala didn’t seem to prefer the Just 6 as much. So this way she gets to have both!

This is Nala’s bowl, filled with Nutrish.
And there’s Nala. She can’t wait to eat dinner!
The dark pieces of kibble are from Just 6. The other pieces are Nutrish.
Mommy put both together in a plastic container for Nala.
This kibble looks pretty good!
Nala really enjoys it, though she doesn’t eat as much as she used to.
Mommy puts some Nutrish over the top of my Pedigree puppy food.
Hey, I like it too! π
There was some talk a few years ago about Rachael Ray’s doggie food containing onions, but apparently the ingredients have changed since then.
Ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Corn Gluten Meal, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Dried Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Dehydrated Alfalfa, Dried Peas, Dried Tomatoes, Dried Carrots, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Olive Oil, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Iron Oxide, Dried Parsley, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Mixed Tocopherols, Niacin, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K activity), Vitamin B112 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Sulfate, Folic Acid.
The Good Stuff:
- Nala seems to like it. I like it too!
- The pieces are small enough and not too hard to chew. Being a senior doggie with a few teeth missing, this is something Nala can easily eat.
- Chicken, chicken meal, and ground rice are the first 3 ingredients.
- No artificial colors, by-products, or artificial preservatives.
- Contains oatmeal for easy digestion
- Proceeds from Nutrish go to pet charities and other organizations that help animals.
The Not-So-Good Stuff:
- Includes corn meal and corn gluten meal. Corn may be very difficult to digest, and is a common allergen in doggies.
My conclusion? Mommy’s still not sure if she’ll continue to buy this doggie food. She’s still learning all about what ingredients are best to have in doggie food, and is still doing research to find the best option for Nala.

Did you know… that today is National Dog’s Day? “National Dog Day is celebrated August 26th annually… to honor dogs more than we currently do, to give them “a day,” to show deep appreciation for our long connection to each other – for their endearing patience, unquestioning loyalty, for their work, their capacity for love and their ability to impact our lives everyday in the most miraculous ways. National Dog Day wishes to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure – and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and ‘abuse-free life’.”

I have no association with the company mentioned in the above review. Mommy bought this product with her own money, and even though I would have preferred a toy, I’m providing my honest opinions. My puppy opinions are my own.

Momma cooks for us. Every week she crock pots a whole chicken then removes the skin and bones and shreds the meat. Then she uses the stock to make brown rice to mix in. Next she chops up mixed veggies into little tiny bits and stirs that in. Finally she adds chopped up blueberries (helps keeps our faces from getting tear stains). Then she freezes daily portions. Our vet says it is a very healthy diet (1/3 meat, 1/3 rice or barley or oatmeal, and 1/3 veggies and fruit).
You’re so very lucky that your mommy cooks for you all the time! My mommy cooks, but she doesn’t like it. π We get to taste lots of stuff that she makes, though! π
That looks yummy!!! Lots of love, Debbie & Holly
That kibble looks good enough to eat. Unfortunately we are both difficult to feed. Louis has alleriges to just about anything in the grain line be it corn, maize, I had acute pancreatitis so now have to have mega low fat – to make life easier the Mom now cooks us fresh chicken and rice every day, our coats have been gleaming since we changed if that’s anything to go by! Have a great weekend Bailey and Nala, love the food tasting photo’s! Dex and Lou xxx
We’re not sure if you’re doing a review or just telling about how Nala likes the food. Whichever, you did a good job on the post. We did a review on Just 6 a bit ago. All 3 of us dogs enjoyed it.
I did a review AND told how Nala likes the food (don’tcha do that in reviews? Teehee! π )
Mom jus’ got us a bag of tweets from Rachel Ray. Dey is made wit oatmeal and fruit. YUM YUM is all me can tink of to describe dese tweets!
Hope you find the right match for her soon.
That food does look pretty yummy! But still not as yummy as Cheese!!! Lately, I have been getting a lot of cheese for doing things right. Glad Nala has something she likes too!!
Puppy Kisses,
Tanner
Tanner, there is NOTHING as good as CHEESE! But mommy won’t give us that for DINNER. BOL
As dogs age, they all seem to change their tastes in food. We have a very difficult time with Phantom. For a while just sprinkling some parmesan cheese on his kibble helped. Now he is eating a prescription diet canned gastrointestinal food along with Merrick’s Granny Pot Pie. He is doing pretty well on it. But there are so many really good foods out there. Keep doing your research and you will find one that works well for Nala, and hopefully for Bailey too. Right now we are feeding three different foods with Phantom and Lightning needing different foods. Ciara and Thunder get EVO grain free turkey and chicken. Lightning is gradually being moved to that too.
Good luck.
Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning
I took a look at the Nutrish website (after applying for a sample) and the Just 6 food looks like it would be pretty nutritious – at least it has no corn or soy which aren’t that good for dogs. My buddies would probably like it but then they are all Hoovers and will suck up anything.
Ha! Everyday is National Dog Day around here. π
It can be hard to find the right food these days. So many choices and so many schools of thought. We had a tough time finding a food that would suit both dogs (just didn’t want to have to deal with two foods if we could avoid it). Finally, after trying a million (not really a million) foods we finally found one that worked for both dogs. Don’t know what we will do as they age and have to find a new food… Keep us posted on what you decide.
Onions? Yuck! I find it hard to believe, but you never know, do you?
Just between you, me and the barn door – I kind of like the smell of the dog food when I give it to my dogs. It smells delicious! No, I do not eat it. Ever! LOL!
Looks yummy!
She is so cute. That dinner sure is purrty up good
