It’s been 1 month and 9 days since Jax had his DPO surgery on both of his hips. He’s had x-rays done every 2-3 weeks since, including this past Tuesday. Sadly, it was at this appointment that we received some shocking and disappointing news. Jax would need to have surgery on both sides, AGAIN. <\/p>\n

The way the doctor tells it, is that his X-rays show that “the double pelvic osteotomies have healed and are well aligned. The left coxofemoral joint is dislocated dorsally. The right femoral neck has undergone avascular necrosis and is close to a pathologic fracture.” This is what his surgeon assessed: “The DPO’s (double pelvic osteotomies) have succeeded in changing his acetabular angles, but ultimately the attempt at correcting the dysplasia has failed. Two options exist: Bilateral staged total hip replacements, which will entail confinement and extended care (and would need to be done at two separate times). The second option is concurrent bilateral femoral head and neck osteotomies. These will not restore him to full function, but it will be better than what he is living with now and will eliminate pain. The aftercare for the FHO (femoral head osteotomies) is immediate mobility and aggressive physical therapy.”<\/p>\n

The surgeon said it was probably nothing we have done — he is a runt and just has bad bones.<\/p>\n

So… we have chosen the later. Jax will have an FHO on both sides. Jax’s surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday, July 20. I wish we could have gotten a more immediate appointment, but unfortunately we couldn’t. We can’t imagine him having to live all this time with a dislocated hip on his left side, and an almost fully fractured femoral neck on his right. This poor puppy.<\/p>\n

From what I gather from the research I’ve been doing about hip dysplasia, the DPO surgery that Jax had last month did not and could not cure<\/em> his hip dysplasia. From this website<\/a>, “it merely targeted the results of hip dysplasia – not the cause. The results of hip dysplasia are an improperly shaped hip (which last month’s surgery corrected). But the cause of hip dysplasia is weakness and looseness of the ligaments and cartilage that hold the hip together.” Jax’s bones are weak, and even though his first surgery was a success, due to his bad bones, his dysplasia could not be corrected. Subsequently, his dysplasia worsened. Thankfully his hips are now properly aligned, which makes him a good candidate for FHO surgery.<\/p>\n

This upcoming surgery on Monday (FHO), will remove the femoral heads on both sides (the ball that rests in the hip socket), and that will be replaced by cartilage and tissue to form a false joint. This surgery has a very high rate of success and even though it could take up to one year for him to reach 90% mobility, he should be up and walking within one day after surgery. <\/p>\n

\ndoing a lot of sunning out in the backyard…<\/em><\/p>\n

\nA few weeks after his surgery, before his legs went bad,
\nJax had one visit from the physical therapist. She went over a
\nfew exercises with us, & Jax got to wear these cool shades!<\/em><\/p>\n

\nEveryone needed them during his laser treatment.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nJax wasn’t yet able to stand on the
\nwobble board, so he just watched.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nI took a shot at standing on the wobble board.
\nThe therapist said it would help my slight hip dysplasia too!
\nDaddy is making our own wobble board, so when Jax gets
\nbetter, we could practice balancing to get a stronger core.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nThis cushion was supposed to be used to help Jax build his core &
\nstrengthen his hind muscles. But since he can’t do any exercises yet,
\nI thought I’d use it for myself! Jax didn’t like that idea much.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nMommy thinks she’s funny. No, it’s not Halloween.
\nShe says that keeping Jax entertained is very challenging,
\nas he cannot walk around and play much.
\nI’m glad we could keep HER entertained!<\/em><\/p>\n
