Bone Wars 1

If you’ve been reading about me for the past few months, you’ll know how much I love chewing on bones. Nothing fancy, just plain ol’ rawhide bones you get at the store. I love them when they’re new, and even after they’ve been chewed down to a size that fits inside my entire mouth. Problem is… Nala likes bones too — even if she can’t chew them anymore.

Bone Wars 1Mommy came home today with a package of new bones. I love new bones. I love new packages filled with bones. I love new packages filled with anything, really. I love when mommy goes shopping and I just think she brought home something. I love anything that’s inside the doggie cupboard. Actually, I love anything that’s inside any of the cupboards… and the refrigerator, and… well you get the idea. But I love bones.

Bone Wars 1Nala and I happened to be sitting around when mommy opened up the doggie cupboard and started waving a new bone around. There were already quite a few bones around the house, but they happened to all be chewed down to little stubs. I like those small chewed up bones because they’re great for kicking around the house.

Then mommy takes out a new bone. Nala starts to get excited thinking it’s hers, and then gets closer to mommy and tries to take the bone from her hand. She pulls it back saying, “This bone’s for Bailey, Nala. You can’t chew it so I’ve got something else for you.” She opens the doggie cupboard and pulls out a Pup-Peroni® for Nala. “OOh, I want one too,” I thought. I give mommy my saddest puppy dog eyes, and she takes out another one for me. “YES!” I knew I could do it.

Bone Wars 1Nala and I both eat our treats and then I remember the new bone sitting on the floor back in the kitchen. Mommy sees me heading for it, just as Nala decides she”s going to. DRAT! Nala got the bone first. I watch Nala take the bone to her couch by the window. “Nala, you can”t chew the bone, sweetie,” mommy says to Nala. Nala ignores her. I look at mommy. She looks at me and says, “Just wait a few minutes, Bailey. She’ll drop it, then you can have your bone back.”

Bone Wars 1So I look at mommy and think… “Suuuure, I’ll wait for her to drop it.” And so I wait a minute. Nope, she hasn’t dropped it yet. Another minute passes. Nope, not yet. I watch Nala as she sits on her couch, trying to chew away at my new bone. I wait, and wait… and wait.

Bone Wars 1By this time, daddy sits on the couch next to Nala. And all of a sudden, BAM! Nala drops the bone on the floor right under her and I GRAB it! Daddy sees me grabbing the bone and doesn’t think I’m being very nice. So, he calls me over and takes the bone. Then he calls Nala over and has her sit beside me. “OK Nala, you take this side and Bailey, you take this side,” he says to us.

Hmmmm, he wants us to S H A R E the bone? Now how’s this gonna work?

My mind starts racing as I’m trying to chew the bone — I just can’t figure it out. Nala can’t chew on bones anymore because she’s an older doggie and her teeth aren’t strong enough. She’s already chipped a tooth (which by the way she has to see the doctor about on Monday — she might have to have it pulled out! GASP!). She usually waits for me to chew the bone a little and soften it up — then she steals it and tries to chew it.

Well… I decide that I don’t want Nala to chip another tooth, so I grab the bone away and start running down the hall with it. At this point, I look so cute that I’ve got everyone laughing and they forget how rude I just was and my non-sharing behavior. Sometimes I can’t stand my cuteness.

Muahaha, victory is mine!

It IS hard to share! It’s especially hard to watch Nala have something else, whether a bone or a toy or whatever… it doesn’t matter if I have one too! I want it all! lol

  2. Oh, Bailey. It’s hard to share, isn’t it?!

  3. Bailey, when you’re as cute as you it’s hard to instill good manners!

My German Shepherd used to wait for Stumpy to soften the bone for him, then he would take it away from her!

    Happy, Waggin’ Tails, FUREVER!
