The Yellow Stuff

I don’t remember if I told you before, but over the past few months, my tummy has gotten a bit sensitive. And a sensitive tummy is definitely no fun!

It started out of the blue with me running around really quickly near mommy — I had this funny feeling in my tummy, and I didn’t quite know what to make of it.

I made sure I got mommy’s attention (running around with my ears down and giving her that look, definitely got her attention), and she stared at me for a moment. Then she jumped right up and opened the sliding door to the backyard. Know what I did then? I zoomed right outta there!

My tummy felt queasy, and my throat made this strange sound. I tasted something just as strange, and in a few moments I was emptying some yellow stuff on the grass. Good thing mommy was right there with me, or I would have wanted to taste it!

Mommy did some research online, and found that the yellow probably meant stomach acid. She also read that it was a very common thing in Shepherd breeds. She kept an eye on me for the rest of the day, but after I threw up I was as good as new…running and jumping and wrecking havoc all over the place.

Some days passed by, and there I was… giving mommy that look agaom. Sure enough, there I went, throwing up the yellow stuff again. It wasn’t a lot — nothing to go totally crazy about. But mommy kept all my episodes written down on paper so she could tell the doctor about it if she needed to.

In the beginning, my episodes happened about twice a month. Then they started occurring more and more. Mommy didn’t call the doctor though, because she had read that this was common, and that sometimes doggies need to be fed twice a day instead of once.

The worst was at the beginning of September, when I threw up a few times in one week, and the first time being 2 days in a row. That’s when mommy got really nervous and called the doctor. She feels bad for waiting so long, but since it was so few and far between earlier on, she didn’t want to drag me to the doctor for no reason.

The doctor didn’t sound worried at all. She also said it sounded like stomach acid, and that mommy should try and feed me two meals instead of one. She also told mommy to give me some Pepcid… 20 mg twice a day for the first day, and once again the next morning, while starting me on meals two times that next morning. That was September 12.

I am happy to say, that the weekend before September 12 was the last time I threw up… 13 full days without the yellow stuff.

Until two days ago.

I was having a very peaceful Sunday morning. Daddy was outside working on the roof, and mommy had just gotten up. Nala and I were laying around. I hadn’t yet eaten my breakfast. All of a sudden, I got this strange, familiar feeling in my tummy. I started pacing back and forth, and alerted mommy with that look. As she had done so many times before, she opened the sliding door and I zoomed outside to throw up on the grass. As before, it was yellow.

The Yellow Stuff
Tummy, tummy, tummy…

Now maybe it was because mommy was late in feeding me my breakfast — who knows. Maybe my tummy had gotten used to eating at a certain time in the morning. Mommy is going to start keeping track of my episodes again, in case things start to get worse again. I think though, that mommy is going to make sure I eat my breakfast early in the morning.

Poor Nala… she doesn’t get fed twice a day, ’cause she doesn’t eat that much. So when mommy feeds me my breakfast, Nala goes all crazy because I’m getting food and she isn’t. She’s even eaten a little of my food a few times!! So, now when mommy feeds me my breakfast, she always puts a little treat in Nala’s bowl. But that doesn’t stop her from trying to sneak my food! That’s right, Nala! I see you!

Have any of you bigger doggies ever had this tummy problem before? If so, what did you do about it?

By the way…

If you haven’t noticed, I finally have more than 100 followers on my Facebook page, and almost 100 Google friends! I know it’s not as much as some other doggies have, but for me, it’s awesome! Thanks to all of you who chose to follow my daily antics. <3 Wishing you all a non-yellow Tuesday! 1. This is pretty common. Kolchak gets the yicky yellow goo when we make him wait too long between meals. As long as we are diligent at feeding on time, he is fine. Felix used to get that all the time before he lived with us and the vet said he may have had a very low grade infection from eating rawhides and other hide-based treats, as they get oggy and bacteria laden rather fast. We cut all rawhide and pig’s ears out of his diet when we got him and we haven’t had a problem since.

It definitely used to happen to Bella a lot when she was younger (and she’s not that big – only 25 lbs). In her case, it seemed to be diet-related – the food she was on seemed to be too rich for her. Even now, she’s best on a bland diet and too much change will bring the yellow stuff back.

What you are describing is not uncommon. Especially in younger large dogs. Thunder had that issue when he was young. We made sure to feed him twice a day (well for the first 6 months it was 3x a day), and no more than 12 hours between feedings. We did not have to give pepcid. We also changed food, (when he turned a year the food he had been on was just not agreeing with him). He has pretty much outgrown it, but we still keep the feeding twice a day (especially since he bloated he needs 2 small meals rather than one big meal). Hope it all works out for Bailey.

    Congrats on your followers!

  4. Ick….tummy aches are da worst. Me hasn’t had da problem but some of me packmates have. Rusty prefers green to yellow though…usually after eating grass. Double Ick!

Icky tummies are the worst! Puffy gets the yellows when she gulps too much air when she is eating or drinking. We hope your new eating routine solves the trouble.

The Yellow stuffs just happens sometimes… even to us Little Guys…
Now about your Followers…. THAT is GRRRREAT… It took about 87 months fur me to get 100 followers. Congratulations… it is WONDERFUL to have furends.

  7. Sophie says:

Jess gets this, because she has a very sensitive stomach.

If you get pig’s ears, rawhide, or bull pizzles – you might be having some sort of reaction to that (they upset Jessie’s stomach BADLY and if she has one she’ll just puke bile once a day or so for a couple days).

She also has to have two meals a day, and since Lola prefers two meals a day (her stomach’s pretty small after all), I just feed both dogs twice a day. 🙂

I sure hope Mom and the Vet figure it out sweet Bailey, you are sure right, tummy problems are no fun at all!

  9. Hi! Bailey! So glad you’re doing better! ! We have occasional stomach problems but mostly from eating things we shouldn’t! Corgis do that!
Best wishes for no more yellow days!

  10. Sam says:

Sam has the same problem. He is on a maintenance dose of prednisone due to being a cancer survivor. We’ve started feeding both Sam and Monty a spoonful of pumpkin in the morning (just the raw stuff, not the pumpkin pie mix) and it has really solved this problem. Plus, we haven’t had the usually farty dog problem either for a while! Good luck – we know upset tummy’s are no fun!

    Sam

P.S. We are looking a the drag-and-drop thing below and it is telling us to drag a bow-tie onto a clutch – there is no bowtie in our options! LOL!

I am sorry you have an upset tummy Bailey!
Sherman has a sensitive stomach and licks his lips a lot like he is nauseous, I began giving him Pepcid in the morning before I feed him and this seems to have help.

Congrats on you FB and google followers! That is great!

  12. Phantom does that a lot too. The vet thinks he has either IBD or chronic pancreatitis. He usually eats grass before he has a yellow episode. We hope you have a lot of yellow-free days too. Maybe something in your food isn’t agreeing with you.

  13. Sue says:

So sorry your tummy has been so upset! We’ve had that problem at our house, but it’s been very, very infrequent. And I’d be doing exactly what your mommy is doing, Bailey. Hope you can figure this out soon!

  14. Anny says:
