Floor Troubles AGAIN?!

Sorry this is late! I just realized that this scheduled post didn’t post… not sure why. πŸ™ If you’re new friends of ours, you may not know what Nala and I had to go through last year. I called it THE BIG THING, well… ’cause it was a big thing! Our family decided to get rid of our doggie couch by the window (still waiting for daddy to build us a new one!), and install some brand new floors. You can read our story here. We thought that was the end of it, but here we are 6 months later…

Daylight Savings Time Reminder…

Don’t forget… Tomorrow (Sunday morning), at 2am, we have to turn our clocks ahead one hour. That means one extra hour each day to play with your furry ones! WooHooo!

Now for Floor Troubles AGAIN?!

If you’d like to read our story, you can read it here.

Nala and I went through a lot when daddy started removing all the old floor tile. It took a few months until he was done, then some strange man came into our home and installed brand new tile. Nala and I were not allowed to walk on it, so daddy made a path out of big pieces of wood, and we walked on that.

After the grout was supposedly dried, mommy and daddy bought a brand new couch (which Nala and I are NOT allowed on).

But this past November, mommy started to notice holes in between the tiles and missing grout! Surely that wasn’t supposed to happen!

That same strange man came and fixed a large area of our floor. He took out the old grout and put in new grout. Then Nala and I had to walk on wood again… for two weeks!

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
These are the three main areas that mommy noticed
this past November, where there were holes in the grout.

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
The installer man came back to fix the grout. When he did,
Nala & I were stuck behind the gate again. We couldn’t believe it!

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
Ahhh, those sheets of wood… how I loved sitting on them.

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
Really… I didn’t mind it one bit. Mommy thought I was
strange, ’cause I had a nice big comfy bed just a few feet away.

Well, if that wasn’t bad enough, just two months later (this past January), mommy started noticing problems with the grout again! This time, she felt the grout with her fingernail, and she was able to brush it away like it was sand! Surely that wasn’t supposed to happen!

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
The grout is so soft still in some places, that
you could brush it away with your fingernails.

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
It’s like sand!

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
It’s definitely not supposed to be like this.

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
Grout is supposed to be hard like cement.

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
The floor is marked with blue tape around our house,
so the installer people will know where the problems are.

Floor Troubles AGAIN?!
This installation is coming back to haunt us!

So now the floor has been grouted three times. I had a feeling it wouldn’t be the last.

A few weeks after this last time, mommy began noticing the same problem… the grout was just not curing correctly. So she wrote a letter to Home Depot’s Customer Service, and received a phone call from a nice lady. She said she would be handling the issue and made sure the store, the installation company, and the grout manufacturer, all got involved.

Just last week, a representative from the grout manufacturing company, came to the house (see this Monday Mischief post), and looked over the grout. Mommy said he was nice overall, but she wasn’t happy in the least when he tried to make it like it was MY fault. But mommy argued that if the grout had hardened like it was supposed to, we still wouldn’t be able to brush it away with our fingernails! He told mommy that it was probably due to excess air in the grout… possibly the installer man didn’t mix it well enough.

As of the writing of this post, mommy was waiting for a call from the grout manufacturing company. Then she’ll set up a day for the installer man to come and re-grout for what we hope will be the final time. The company is probably going to put a hardener/sealant over the grout when they come fix it for the fourth time. It’s been six months already — mommy thinks it’s time for us all to enjoy the floor without pieces of wood all over for paths, pieces of blue tape on the tiles, and holes in the grout. Nala and I think we’ve been through enough too!

I agreed with Amy @ LifewithDoxies. Thank You!

  2. Wow! What a pain! I hope you and your family can start to enjoy your new floor soon.

Wow! What a pain in the butt! I can’t believe that man tried to say it was your fault Bailey! Hopefully four times a charm!

  4. Oh my goodness, you have really gone through a lot with your floor. I hate things like that. Hopefully this will be the final time and it will be fixed properly this time. I KNOW it was NOT your fault.

  5. Nancy K. says:

Heck! The grout on my tile floor gets holes every now and then and I just add more grout myself. I never knew that I could have had the people that put the floor in re-do it!

My ex used to tell me it was because I use the vacuum on the floor instead of sweeping. I’m still using the vacuum. πŸ˜‰

I hope your problem gets resolved!

The problem with our grout, is that it hasn’t hardened in a few areas. It’s like sand, and it can be swept away with your finger. This started just 2 months after the floor was installed — this is why we’re able to have the company take care of things. Grout that’s hardened correctly shouldn’t be able to be swept away like sand. πŸ˜‰

I have odd insight into this issue. First off, I used to work at a flooring company, and I can personally say that grout is a big PITA. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it…It truly is a pain. If things keep happening with it, you may want to talk to the company about paying to remove the flooring and putting down some super tough laminate product. Flexitec is a GREAT brand and an awesome product that’s perfect for families with paws.

Blaming your grout issues on pet hair is just odd. I’ve never heard that before.

On a side note, I’m happy to find a blog with a Belgian Shepherd! Arie is a White German Shepherd, but when I first got her, I really started to notice all of the black and tan shepherds I saw. Twice I confused a Belgian Shepherd or Belgian Tuveren and mistook them for shepherds. Now I can spot them much more easily. πŸ™‚

  7. Sure hope they aren’t charging you for each time they come out and re-grout the floor. It’s been quite a time for all of you. Hope this time the grout will harden properly and it will be done!

    • bailey says:

They’re definitely not charging us. Mommy says she’s been in touch with the corporate offices, and they are doing whatever they can to fix things. When all is done, mommy is going to request that her warranty be extended!

  8. Jen says:

I’d be pretty ticked off if I was your mom and had to keep calling the grout guy! AND if he blamed Elka. Hoo boy.

Hope you get it straightened out!
