Lizard Hunt

Lizards, geckos, chameleons…whatever you call them, ever since I saw that first little reptile scurry across the deck, I fell in love. I love trying to catch them! I actually have never eaten one, but I have had one in my mouth a few times (mommy or daddy happened to always be there to remove it from my grasp). That’s OK though, because I think looking for them and chasing them are more fun than eating them. I hear they bite!

Today was such a nice day — not cold like yesterday. The lizards don’t come out much in the cold, and when they do, they don’t move! It’s not much fun chasing something that doesn’t move.

Lizard HuntI usually start off looking for lizards around the patio — they run across the rocks and under the tool shed. Once they reach the shed, there’s no way I’m going to be able to get them. Those lizards sure are fast! I can’t reach underneath and I can’t get inside without the door being open. Mommy says it’s too dangerous for me to go inside there anyway. Mowers, shovels and other garden supplies are just not for doggies.

Lizard HuntI tried searching around the pool. There are usually lizards here — what’s going on? Lizards love the rocks around the pool because they can hide there. I’m very surprised that I can’t find any. I would search under the pool deck, but due to an accident I had a couple of months ago, I can’t go underneath the deck anymore.

Lizard HuntYou see, I used to run underneath one end of the deck, and come out the other. Nala used to chase me and I used to be able to get away, because she never liked going underneath the deck. She used to wait on the outside until I came out the other end. It was a great hiding place.

But one night when I was about 5 months old, I ran underneath the deck and must have hit a post, because I was in such pain. I cried so loud, that my neighbors across the street heard me. My family was so worried. But I’m a strong puppy and we’re all glad that I didn’t get seriously hurt from that accident.

Sooo…immediately after that time, daddy began rebuilding the pool deck. He closed up all the sides so I couldn’t go underneath it anymore. I was really sad about losing my hiding place, but my family didn’t want me to get hurt again. I was getting big and didn’t realize that I couldn’t fit underneath the side opening as well as I could when I was a little puppy. See the photos below.

Nala came outside after a while, and she began to help me on my lizard hunt. Nala LOVES looking for lizards! She ran right over to the BBQ and started looking behind it. No lizards. I went over and tried to help her look underneath the BBQ cover — it’s a great hiding spot. No lizards. I thought I saw one coming out the other side — nope! No lizards!

Lizard HuntI started looking near the gate…ooh, what a cute dandelion! Good thing mommy took a photo of it, because I ate it right after she showed it to me! It tasted good!

Back to lizard hunting…

Mommy found 3 lizards…boy, she’s good at hunting! First she saw one on the fence in the front of the yard — it was leaning on the ledge. I could hardly see it, but mommy showed it to me just before it scurried away. The next one we saw was on another side of one of the fences. I wasn’t able to reach that one either, but mommy was quick enough to get a photo of it. The last one she saw, was further down on the same fence. That one also ran and hid behind one of the wooden posts, just after mommy snapped a picture. I’m glad today’s hunt turned out to be a success, even though I didn’t get to actually chase down a lizard.

Lizard HuntBefore we ended our hunt, I discovered something really unique — it was on the bottom of the fence in the back. Mommy said there was a heart in one of the slats of wood. She said that heart proves that we all love each other. She thinks it’s really pretty, and I do too. <3
