Tagnabbit vs Tag CLIP

Nala’s 12 years old, and for all of her life, she has mostly worn only one collar at a time… But now our mommy would like to be able to do a quick change so Nala could wear other collars, especially when we go for walks, and the old way of moving ID tags from one collar to the next, is just that… OLD.

You probably know that it’s not easy to remove ID tags from the rings they’re attached to, let alone put them back on another collar. I watched my mommy do this a few times already. Sometimes Nala even wore two collars at once! So she began exploring ID tag holders. The two that she tried out are Tagnabbit and the Tag CLIP.

ID Tag #1: Tagnabbit by Petmate&#174

Tagnabbit is made by Petmate&#174. Sound familiar? That’s the company that makes the Dogzilla&#174 toys (read my review). Overall, the toy is OK, but it wasn’t durable enough to stop me from chewing off parts of it. But the name was known, so mommy went ahead and bought their Tagnabbit ID tag holder.

Tagnabbit VS Tag Clip
The concept is really quite good — two rings are attached together with a swivel middle, and ID tag rings can easily be pushed onto the bottom ring, while the smaller top ring easily pushes onto your collar of choice.

Tagnabbit VS Tag Clip
The only problem with this ID tag holder, is that the top and bottom rings both open way too easily. Nala was supposedly wearing this ID tag holder when MT found it laying on the floor. The ID tags will do no good if they don’t stay on the collar.

The Good Stuff:

Well, it really is a cute little contraption.

  • It’s easy to push and open each side of the rings.
  • Easy access for moving tags from one collar to the next.
  • It’s small.

The Not-So-Good Stuff:

Like I said… if the ID tags can’t stay with the collar, it’s pretty useless.

  • Both rings open way too easily.
  • ID tags can fall off the holder.
  • The entire ID tag holder can fall off the collar, leaving your pet unidentifiable if lost (unless they’re microchipped).

My conclusion? It’s best to be certain that your furry one’s ID tags cannot easily fall off their collar. If your furry ever gets lost, you’ll need this second method of finding them (tags are important!), if for any reason their microchip cannot be immediately read.

ID Tag #2: Tag CLIP by The Hillman Group

Since the previous ID tag holder didn’t work out so well, my mommy went searching for a replacement. She still wanted to be able to change Nala’s collar when we went walking. Eventually she found Tag CLIP at our doggie hospital store.

Tagnabbit VS Tag Clip
At first glance, this ID tag holder seems to be the answer to the problem.

Tagnabbit VS Tag Clip
Instead of the top ring easily being pushed in to attach to the collar ring, you have to push down on the trigger to first open the top ring. Once you let go of the trigger, the spring immediately snaps back and the ring quickly closes. It won’t be easy for this ID tag holder to fall off a collar!

Tagnabbit VS Tag Clip
The bottom ring is just that — a ring. There are no openings to push in. It works pretty much the same way as ID tag rings, but instead of having a separate ring for each ID tag, you only need the one. Place all the tags on this one ring, and you’re good to go!

The Good Stuff:

This one actually works!

  • It isn’t easy for the top ring to open, so the chances of it falling off a collar are very small.
  • The bottom ring is like a key ring — you slide your tags directly onto the ring, and once they’re on… they shouldn’t come off unless you remove them.
  • Easy access for moving tags from one collar to the next.
  • It’s small.

The Not-So-Good Stuff:

Hmmm… I don’t think there are any bad things to say about this ID tag holder…

  • It’s slightly larger than the previous ID tag holder.

My conclusion? I think this ID tag holder is great… in fact, I want one of my very own! I’d love to change my collar when we go walking! I know mommy loves this tag holder too, because there’s very little chance of Nala losing it.

Even though we’re both microchipped, it’s good to have physical ID tags as well… just in case we’re lost and found by someone, and they can’t take us to have our chips read.

Tagnabbit VS Tag Clip
It isn’t heavy, and it lays nice on a collar. 🙂

Mommy paid for each of these products with her own money. My puppy opinions are my own.

I thought it was amazing that we talked about the same tag holder on the same day! How awesome is that?!

Good luck finding a new tag — let me know what your mommy finds!

We went to the hardware store and got a small hook very similar to the second one you show. It works great and we’ve been using it for a couple of years.

Thanks for the product review though – I always like to hear what people think of certain products.

I’m sure there are a few other options for holding tags — awesome that you found one! If my mommy hadn’t seen this one in the doggie hospital store, she would have gone to Home Depot… they have lots of clips to choose from! 🙂

We have always liked the idea of these kind of tag holders but momma has been fearful that if the holder fails then all of the tags are lost and we would have no ID except our microchip. The Tag CLIP looks like it is pretty reliable! Thanks for testing out the options available…your review has been VERY helpful.
