We come across a lot of creatures in our backyard… like lizards, snakes, spiders, various buggies, occasional neighborhood kitties, and frogs. I don’t want to come into contact with either of those (well, except for the lizards and kitties), butt it’s those big, bad Bufo Toads that I really need to watch out for.
As I’ve mentioned before, when this non-native species is threatened or handled, it secretes a highly toxic milky substance from its large parotoid glands at the back of its head, behind the ears. This secretion can burn your eyes, may irritate your skin, and can kill cats and dogs if they ingest the secretion.
The other day, I found this toad in the grass. Mommy came right over to see what I was looking at, and rushed me away from it. Then she made sure he wouldn’t be hanging around in the middle of the yard anymore.
Look at this guy — isn’t he scary?!
He’s HUGE!!
Mommy used a rake to persuade the toad to move to
the other side of the yard. I couldn’t take my eyes
off of him, though… he thought I couldn’t see him.
He couldn’t hide from us though.
We watched his every move!
Mommy shooed him away by putting a rake
near him. Then he started hopping away!
Look how long his legs are!
Mommy made sure he went to the other side of the yard.
Once mommy had him on the other side of the yard,
she kept moving the rake alongside him, so he would
keep going in the right direction. He was almost there!
That’s when he jumped into the space under the shed
that daddy made. I guess if you’re a toad, it’s a nice
place to live. You’d have to like lizards, ’cause there
are lots of lizards living underneath there!
If you ever happen to come across a big frog or toad, don’t take any chances — stay as far away from it as you can. If you do come in contact with him and you ingest toxins, have your mommy use a hose to rinse out your mouth and/or your eyes, then call the doggie doctor!
Watch out for those toads, friends! 🙂

Thanks for getting out the word that toads are NOT toys! Dad lost a kitty that way when he was in high school.
We have those here too. Dad does not like having them anywhere close to us.

Scary toads. I’m glad you stayed away. I will make sure to watch out for toads in our area, too!
I wonder if they are in the same group as the Cane Toad which now infests Australia? They were introduced to eat the cane beetles that were attracting the sugar cane – only problem was – they don’t eat those beetles!!! And because they have the same poison sacks as your toads do – nothing eats them – so of coarse they spread like crazy. Oh we just did a search on it and look what we found “Australia, Cane Toad (Bufo Marinus)”

Mommy here…..I worry so much about those frogs. I’ve seen a lot of frogs that kind of look like that in the yard but I’m not really sure if they’re the Bufo toad or just a plain frog. All the dogs seem to avoid them so they must have a scent the dogs don’t like. Bufo or not, I’d rather not have them hanging around.

Oh my gosh, I would have been so skeert! Good thing your mommy is so brave!. I’ll catch up with you when I get back next week from visiting the grandchildren in California.
That toad was big. That is one critter I have never encountered. I hope I remember your advise about them. Maybe I should have my MOM write it down.

Yuck! it looks so scary!
I have toads in my yard too but they are much smaller and they look plain. My humans don’t like them as they think they are poisonous and never allow me to play with them.
