The Land of Dragonflies

I’ve posted before about how many dragonflies we often have flying around our house. Recently, we’ve come across two really big dragonflies…

For some reason, this year we’ve seen a lot more dragonflies than usual. Dragonflies are good, ’cause they eat mosquitos. Mosquitos carry diseases, and they always seem to bite my mommy and Taylor. So around here we really like to see dragonflies.

A couple of months ago, there were lots of dragonflies flying around outside our house. We even saw baby dragonflies! There must have been lots of mosquitos for them to eat! And just last month, we found one really big dragonfly, hanging onto our outside light.

I wonder if our house attracts dragonflies? Seeing all these dragonflies got me wanting to know more about them.

How big do dragonflies get? Did you know that dragonflies can grow up to six inches, all the way down to the smallest one, which is less than an inch!

Do they bite? Only mosquitos and gnats! They don’t have any interest in chewing on humans or furries, so no worries there!

What do they eat? Dragonflies mostly eat mosquitos, gnats, and other small insects. But they are also known to eat butterflies and even moths!

How long do dragonflies live? Adult dragonflies can live several weeks or even months, depending on the type of dragonfly.

Do dragonflies have any enemies? They do! Birds, spiders, and frogs eat dragonflies. Even larger dragonflies eat smaller dragonflies!

The Land of Dragonflies
Just a few nights ago, there was another large
dragonfly flying around our outside light.

But by the next morning, mommy found it on the floor.
It was not moving. πŸ™

Mommy thinks that it was old and it was just his time to go.

Then, just a few days later when mommy was walking Nala and me out back, we found another big dragonfly! It was thrashing about near the ground, out by the barbecue.

Like the other one, we left it alone.
By the next morning, it was gone.

When the dragonfly came back later that night, it was flying around the light over the patio table. Mommy went inside to get her camera — she took a few photos of the backyard dragonfly. πŸ™‚

If you ever see a dragonfly, don’t be scared. They eat all the bad insects that bite people and furries. Having them around is good for the environment. πŸ™‚

  1. We seem to get a lot of dragonflies that insist on squeezing through a little tiny hole in the screen room over the swimming pool. They don’t go in the water but they seem to love being near the pool. Mom tries to catch them (before we do) and she puts them back outside ’cause there’s no bugs for them to eat in the screen room.

    :o)

Mom will try to remember to post a pic of the dragonfly she saw at work yesterday when she updates our blog today. It was 6 inches long and beautifully colored. We get the red, green and brown varieties here in Arizona, but Mom doesn’t know much about them after that!

  18. Dragonflies are a favorite around here too. We’ve seen more than usual this summers, like bunches of them! We love them because they eat all the bad bugs.

Once when I was riding on a jet ski around a lake one landed on my finger, hung on for dear life and took the ride with me. It was a big one and it was so cool!!
