Hate My Flea Med (& Video)

Fleas. No one likes them… not me, not Nala, not my human family. I bet you don’t like them either, right?

Mommy used to use Frontline on Nala. Frontline is a liquid that goes on a doggie’s back. Nala hated it, ’cause she was afraid of rubber gloves (see this post). Then I came into the family. I had been given Comfortis (a chewable beef-flavored tablet), by the organization that rescued me, so that’s what my mommy continued to do. It didn’t occur to her right away to switch Nala to Comfortis, and when she did think about it, she was afraid that Nala might not do well on it. Some doggies get a little sick when they first start taking it, but I did well.

Eventually, mommy switched Nala over to Comfortis, and she did really well on it… so that’s what we’ve both been on for the past year.

For the past couple of months though, I have been giving mommy a hard time when taking my Comfortis. I’ve become a very picky eater, and I’m not excited about chewing the Comfortis tablet anymore. This has lead my mommy to come up with some creative ways to make sure I take my flea med.

The other day, after mommy gave Nala her Comfortis, she broke my tablet into small pieces and placed them into my bowl with my dinner. She started breaking the tablet into smaller pieces, because when she would give me the full tablet, I would just drop it on the floor. But as I had done the past few months, I ate my dinner and left the Comfortis pieces. So mommy then took all the little pieces and crushed them up and mixed it with the first thing she pulled out of the refrigerator… sour cream.

I could have told her that wasn’t my first choice. It didn’t go over very well… I didn’t touch one bit of it.

The next day, Mommy had to go back to the doctor’s and buy another Comfortis tablet… and try again.

This time, she tried it with one of my favorite things… cheese. She broke the tablet into small pieces again, and hid a piece inside some folded cheese.

Hate My Flea Med
Come on, mommy… I can see right through that piece of cheese.
As much as I love cheese, there’s no way I’m eating that.
And I didn’t.

Hate My Flea Med
So mommy crushed up all the little tablet pieces, and
mixed it with another of my favorite foods… cream cheese.
But I still didn’t want it. I knew exactly what she was doing.

Hate My Flea Med
Then daddy had this idea — why not put the cream cheese
tablet mix on a cracker? I don’t usually get crackers…
so I was a little interested.

Hate My Flea Med
Whoooops!

Hate My Flea Med
Mommy held the cracker up to my mouth, but
I didn’t take it. I let it drop right to the floor.
It landed cream cheese side down.

Hate My Flea Med
Hahaha

Hate My Flea Med
Mommy picked up the cracker and gave it to me again.
This time I chewed it.

Hate My Flea Med
The cream cheese wasn’t great, but I enjoyed the cracker.

Hate My Flea Med
Mommy gave me another cracker.

Hate My Flea Med
The cracker was yummy.
The cream cheese tablet mixture — not so much.

Hate My Flea Med
But mommy kept feeding them to me,
and I kept eating them.

Hate My Flea Med
Nom nom nom…

Hate My Flea Med
I made such a mess on the floor, but mommy didn’t care.

Hate My Flea Med
She was just happy that I kept eating the crackers.

Hate My Flea Med
It may have taken me longer to eat…

Hate My Flea Med
But I eventually ate them all.

Hate My Flea Med
She thinks she tricked me, but I know exactly what she did.

Hate My Flea Med
Doesn’t matter if I thought it tasted somewhat good.

Hate My Flea Med
The best was when I got to have some cheese.
Thank goodness there was nothing hiding in there.

Video…

Mommy knows about those treats with pockets for medicine, but I won’t even chew something that big to begin with. How does your mommy get you to take medicine that you don’t like?

The few times I’ve had to give the boys medicine, I’ll get it in liquid form so I can pour it over their kibble. Now that I feed raw, it’s a little more difficult. When I have to give the boys their liver, I “drop” it on the floor and “race” to pick it up before the boys can get it. That way they think they’re tricking me. But you wouldn’t fall for that, would you, Bailey?

  2. We use the velveeta cheese slices, you can put the tablet in it and then roll it around in your palms until if make a ball – mmmmmm they are like cheese puffs !

  3. Prudence says:

Mom usually hides my meds in cheese, although peanut butter on a piece of bread works fur her too! We loved the video Bailey, you look like you knew exactly what they were trying to feed you!

  4. Winston says:

    Bailey,
Are hoomanz are so funny, they try their hardest to trick us into taking the medicines! When I had the sickies, at Santa Paws time, Mommy broke the pills into little, bitty pieces and sprinkled it over my chicken and rice. I knew it was there but gobbled it down anyway!
Mommy said she felt very lucky cuz those pills had to go down one way or the other!

  5. Suka says:

    hey Bailey,

BOL! Great pictures! You are so funny! My human and I were both laughing! You are a very smart pup! I wonder if your mom will be able to do the cracker trick for next time. ;->

Looks like you enjoyed that cracker even with the meds on it…not a bad way to get it though! Love the “nom-nom-nom” photo!!!! That was a good one! Here – I have to slide the vitamins & pills down the throat, or if they are s mall enough in the mozzerella cheese or in the middle of a piece of pizza crust! I’ll have to try the cream cheese on crackers the next time! Good idea!

  7. Brandi Yee says:

Ahhhh, so glad you let your mom give it to you with a cracker! Crackers are the best, they make anything taste yummy hehe. You are sooo cute Bailey!! You remind me of a Belgian Sheepdog I had growing up who I loved dearly. Thanks for following my blog! I’ve read many of your comments through my mom’s blog, Basset Momma hehe. Looking forward to reading more of your stories πŸ˜‰

  8. Hmmm….my Mommy just opens me mouth and shoves her finger wit da pill right down my throat. Den her gives me sometin I really like to eat so I forgets all about da pill and poppin it back out at Mom.

  9. Sherry says:

Ha ha, Bailey, you were pretty clever, holding out until the humans made something you really like. Our mom thinks it’s easier just to use Frontline, though it’s hard to get the stuff through our dense coats.

  10. Dexter Dog says:

Hey Bailey, My Mum thought you were very funny and very clever. I eat first and think later so my Mum never has a problem getting me to take tablets. My vet gave my Mum a worming tablet that the vet said all dogs would love. But my sister Millie says she knows the vet is just trying to trick us, and even if Mummy hides it in a sausage, she will not eat it. Millie is pretty smart like that. Dexter

  11. Oh Bailey,

I’ve been there too!! Do they really think we’re gonna eat it if they just put it in our Dinner bowl? My Mum also tried to hide it in peanut butter, like I didn’t know!!

This was when I had antibiotics – both her and I were really happy when I didn’t have to have them any more as it was a lot of messing about! πŸ™‚

By the way, does your medicine prevent ticks too?

    Have a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy πŸ™‚

    • bailey says:

Hmmm… I didn’t know this, but it doesn’t. I don’t think we have a problem with ticks here, but I will tell my mommy just in case — wouldn’t want to pick up any ticks! Ah, I can’t imagine switching to something that gets put on my back (and I know Nala won’t be happy about that!). Yuck!

  12. Jen says:

Oh Bailey, it is hard when we strange humans try to force you to eat something!

Luckily, with Elka, I can hand her most things and she’ll just eat them, pills included. Sometimes peanut butter comes into play.

  13. Oh goodness Bailey, you are just hysterical! I laughed and laughed as I went through this blog. First of all, you are one smart cookie! You know what you like and what you don’t and nobody’s going to fool you! I have the same problem with my pups. Sugar has to take a pill twice a day for Valley Fever. I”m so happy it’s small because I can hide it in a small piece of lunch meat. Now she has to take a pill for her arthritis and it’s huge! It is supposed to be chicken flavored, but Sugar is no dummy. She won’t touch it! I’m going to have to break it down but I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it. She likes peanut butter, but she’d have to eat a gallon of it to get it down! I’d also like suggestions. Sugar is so darn picky, just like Bailey. You just can’t fool these smart doggies!

  14. Bassetmomma says:

Ha!Ha! I have actually pushed Freds pill in a piece of weinner! Great pictures! I think I have followed? you on Google + or joined your cirlce or my circle….whatever! It’s confusing! LOL!

  15. Frankie Furter and Ernie says:

I don’t like the Frontline Greasy Yuck… and I did try Comfortis… butt it does NOT do TICKS… So THIS year.. another Greasy thingy… Advantix..

Have you ever tried puttin pills in Squirt Cheese?? Kraft Easy Cheese Cheddar is OUR favorite…

Bailey… get your mom to give this a try… It really HIDES the yucky pill smell… and then when you eat THAT glob… you get another Squirt fur bein GOOD.. YUMMMMMMMMMM

  16. Goose says:

Well my MOM puts it in cheese. Yea I know it’s there. But she cuts 4 to 6 cubes stick the meds in 2 or 3 and she tosses me a non med cheese then one with the pill in it and back to one without. If it’s a pill that can be crushed then she pound the heck out of it and mixes it with a little soft dog food (I don’t get that soft stuff very often). Of course I know what’s coming when I hear the pounding. I like the cracker idea, maybe MOM will try that one on me the next time I need to take a pill.
    Blessings,
    Goose

  17. We use cheese alot and yogurt. But it is really amazing how they can pick it out no matter what. Have had to resort to the jam and cram a few times as well. Bailey I would suggest you better start like these stuffs or you may get the Jam and Cram treatment. Or some people may call it the gag and Not puke it back up method. BOL

Winston can hid pills in his jowls just when you think he took it you will find it laying on the floor like 2 hours later.

    Have a great weekend!

  18. Roo says:

    Bailey! Hello my furiend πŸ˜€
So, you take comfortis too eh. Yeah beef flavored my tail! Tastes like chalk huh. Blick. Mom use to use the cream cheese trick butt then I got suspicious like you. I’d still take it butt only if Mom gave me a cream cheese glob with nothin in it first and then gave me the one with the chalky pill. I like crackers! Only get them every once in a yellow moon πŸ˜‰ I’ll have to suggest this as an alternative to Mom πŸ™‚
She did try something new or at least she said she did cause I really don’t think there was a pill in it. She took a portion of a turkey dog (BallPark is my fav πŸ˜‰ and hollowed it out. Put the pill in there (would have to do this twice for Comfortis- cut in half cause of size) and then put the part of the turkey dog she hollowed out over the pill in the hole to seal it up.
Gave me a small piece of turkey dog first, then the pill. Now she says she put the pill in there butt honestly I can’t tell you as I kind of woofed it down ;P Nommers πŸ˜€

Pawlease tell Nala howdy hi fur me K?

    Waggin at ya,
    Roo

  19. Higgins says:

BOL!!! Oh Bailey, you had my mom howling with laughter!! She kept saying, poor Bailey’s mom!!! When will our humans ever figure it out that we are way much smarter than they are!!!! πŸ™‚ I will however take my Comfortis with cheese and peanut butter, but I am a little dog and my pill is pretty small, not big like yours!!

    ~Higgins

  20. Hi Bailey, we usually have tablets in a piece of fritz (sort of a sausage type thingy) or rolled in peanut butter. Cause we are so greedy we eat anything before we realise what it is hehe. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory
