Surgery Fundraiser for Jax Repost

I am reposting this as suggested by some friends. My little brother Jax needs surgery. πŸ™

Welcome everyone! For those who don’t know me, my name is Bailey. I’m a Leonberger/Shepherd mix girl doggie, and I’ll be 5 years old next month! I’ve included our story & some photos below, so you could get to know us and learn about Jax. Thanks so much for visiting! <3

Message from my hu-mommy…

To everyone who’s visited this page — thank you so much! Whether you’re able to donate or not, we would all appreciate it if you could please share this page wherever you can, and please do ask your friends to share it as well. After Nala left us, Jax saved us. Now we’d like the opportunity to save him. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for any help you can provide! <3 ~JM

About my Nala…

My family rescued Nala, an American Eskimo mix, at 2 months old. My hu-sister Taylor was a little more than 2 years old then. Nala was a such huge part of the family, and she loved being the only doggie. When she was 12 years old, Mommy and Daddy had this great idea to rescue another doggie, which turned out to be me! Nala didn’t really want anything to do with me pretty much the entire first year, because she didn’t really know how to be with another doggie. But she came around and ended up being my best friend. We had lots of fun times during our 4 short years together.

This past January, my life changed when I lost my best friend. Being 16 years old, Nala was doing fairly well for her age… but she had terrible arthritis and it had gotten progressively worse over her last few months. At the beginning of January, she stopped eating because she was having trouble moving her jaw, so she was put on a veterinary prescription canned food. Her appetite was still good, but it soon became such an effort to eat even soft food. Her arthritis had gotten worse, and it was affecting every part of her body. No medication was working, and her last couple of days had been so hard on her. I knew this time was coming, and I always dreaded it. Mommy wished for her to go peacefully in her sleep, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Mommy said that making that decision was so very hard, but seeing her the way she was, was so much harder. Nala had been so very sad for too long, and Mommy said she had no quality of life. She hadn’t been wanting to play or be interested in anything for many months. So Mommy and Daddy gathered up all their love for Nala, and helped her over the Rainbow Bridge on January 10, 2015.

About my Jax…

After Nala left us, it was really sad around our family. We all missed her like crazy, especially me, so Mommy, Daddy and my hu-sister Taylor, thought about getting me a new sibling. Just one week after Nala left us, Mommy and Taylor went around visiting local rescue organizations, and surprised me with a 2 month old little Shepherd mix boy (debate is out to whether he’s a Chow/Puggle mix? Hmmm). We named him Jax! You can read & see pics & a video about Jax here (with video) and here.

When Jax first came to us, we noticed that his hind legs were a little different, and that he bunny hopped. It was such a cute thing to watch. We also noticed that he laid around… a lot! Instead of being the type of puppy that loved to jump up on things and climb, he just preferred to crawl around or put his paws up to be carried. We thought he was just a lazy boy! He also couldn’t sit up on his hind legs. Mommy thinks that Jax was probably the runt of the litter, because they had seen his brother and at 2 months old compared to Jax, he was big! It didn’t matter how he ran or jumped, because he was just the cutest little thing (even though he was a BOY).

Jax needs surgery…

At the beginning of May, 2015, Jax started limping. We all thought he might’ve sprained his leg from running outside, so we watched, and waited. It seemed to disappear after a couple of days, but then reappeared. And along with the limp, was a noticeable ‘popping’ coming from his hips. After x-rays were taken at our doctor’s office, we learned that the cause of his limping is due to hip dysplasia.

Mommy was told that he needed surgery called a double pelvic osteotomy (DPO). Jax is now 6 months old and is at the perfect age to correct his hip dysplasia. After his growth plates close, he would not be able to have this problem fixed without getting a total hip replacement. If we do nothing, the surgeon told us that he will surely have early onset arthritis within a couple of years. You could see more about DPO here, here, and here.

In just 4 months, Jax went from being a happy, hoppy little puppy, to a puppy that prefers to lay down and crawl most of the time. He’s currently taking medications (Rimadyl & Dasuquin) to control his pain and inflammation, so he could still walk and run. Our doctor said that over time he’s taught himself the best positions to keep his legs in so they don’t pop out of the socket as much, but it’s becoming an effort for him to move, to play, to run… and to enjoy life the way a puppy should.
Mommy said that she has never ever done a fundraiser, but the past year has been extremely hard financially and they just cannot afford Jax’s surgery.

That’s where I come in! I set up this fundraiser for Jax, thinking that there could be a chance that we could raise the money he needs. It would be so wonderful to have Jax choosing to run and play with me like he did when he first came home to us.

The cost for Jax’s care includes:

  • X-rays & meds that he’s already received: $426.96
  • Pre-Anesthesia blood work $126
  • Double Pelvic Osteotomy (DPO, both hips) $4228

Any funds raised over the goal will go toward his aftercare and well-being.

I think I have to mention that unfortunately, your donations for Jax’s surgery cannot be deducted for tax purposes — he’s not a non-profit. He’s just a little puppy!

Even if you cannot donate at this time, it would be so great if all of you could please share this fundraiser link wherever you could… on your blog, your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and any other social media accounts you have. And please ask others to share it too! If word gets out enough, maybe we’ll be able to afford to put little Jax’s hips back where they belong.

Jax Facts…

~ At 2 months old, Jax was 10.7 lbs. The rescue organization gave him the name “Mojo,” which happens to rhyme with our hamster’s name, “JoJo! He won’t get nearly as big as me (currently 66.4 lbs!), but he might get to be about 45-50 lbs (Nala was at least 30 lbs when she was her biggest). NOPE! We don’t think Jax will even reach 30 lbs. We have bets going to see how big he’ll get. O_o
~ Jax was born November 19, the DAY AFTER Nala (November 18). Jax also happens to look a little like me.
~ At 2 & 1/2 months, he was 12.8 lbs.
~ At 3 months, 1 week old, Jax was 16.2 lbs. The doctor thinks he’ll definitely be under 40 lbs. YEP! When I was 3 months old, I was already 30 lbs!
~ Jax is finally learning how to ring the potty bell to let us know he has to go out. At just 13 weeks, it was still hard for him to hold it for long, but he tried!
~ Jax barks when asked to TALK! He doesn’t have a strong bark yet (and doesn’t really bark much at all), but when he does it’s really cute and high-pitched and lots of times he sounds like Chewbacca from Star Wars. We should have named him Chewie.
~ Jax is scared of loud noises (passing trucks, motorcycles, trains, thunder, mowers, people talking in the distance, etc). He bolts toward the house, even if he has to go potty. Unlike me, he tends to hold it in when he’s scared. I don’t have that problem! Teehee!
~ Mommy washed Nala’s Thundershirt, and it shrunk just enough that it fits Jax PERFECTLY. It never worked for Nala, but we think it does help Jax a little. Anything to make him less afraid is OKAY with me. πŸ™‚
~ He would rather curl up with me in one of my big beds, rather than sleep alone in his little bed. Though he does like that too. πŸ™‚
~ He really does look fierce sometimes.
~ At 6 months old, Jax is now 25.8 lbs. He still prefers to lay near on me, and sometimes I let him.
~ At 11pm it’s ‘sleepy time,’ and Jax knows it’s no more play time. He’s really good about sleeping through the night. πŸ™‚

Are you following the correct link for my RSS Feed?

I heard from many of you that my feed has not been showing up in your readers for quite some time. I am so sorry! Feedburner said my RSS Feed got too big, and it stopped sending it out. :/ So I deleted it and it’s now located here. The problem I have, is that everyone who had previously subscribed, is no longer subscribed. πŸ™ I have your emails, and plan on sending out one general message asking everyone to change the URL of the feed so you could continue receiving it in your reader (nope, haven’t done this yet). You can always visit my page and click on the RSS link in the sidebar. I hope this will solve the problem, so you can be notified of new posts. Please do let me know if this solves the problem! πŸ™‚
